The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple diagnosti tool used to identify health problems associated with obesity. Generally, a BMI value between 18.5 and 25.0 indicates a healthy weight in proportion to height. Above 25.0 is considered to be overweight, above 30.0 obese, and above 40.0 morbidly obese. Below 18.5 is considered underweight, and below 17.5 may indicate some type of eating disorder.

The Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) is similarly used as a simple diagnostic tool to identify obesity-related health problems. The waist measurement is made by measuring the waist just above the hip bone, and the hips measurement is made at the widest point of the hips.

For women, a WHR of 0.7 is considered ideal, and for men, the ideal ratio is 0.9. In fact, studies indicate that the WHR is an even stronger indicator of general health and mortality than the BMI.
